The lifecycle of a clothe & Carpet moth
The eggs are laid: Once mating has occurred, the females lay 40 to 50 eggs over a period of 4-21 days that hatch into moth Lavae.
The larvae: These live for a long period of 50 days before they pupate into adult moths, all the time feeding on the fibres of your clothes & carpets.
When the larvae pupate, they wrap themselves in a silken case sealed with excrement and fibre which looks about the same size and shape as agrain of rice.
The lifecycle lasts for about 60 to 90 days days, with the female adult moths living for about 30 days and laying up to 300 eggs in there adult state. Its the lavae the damage, as the adult moths themselves, known as ‘millers’, pose no threat to your knitwear, but more an irritating reminder of your deteriorating wardrobe. The larva's favourite food are natural fibres such as wool, hair, leather, cotton, linen, silk and synthetic fibre mixes – all the expensive things basically.
